Nino: ‘The sketchbook has no brand name and I haven’t seen it in any shop since I bought it, which is probably good, because I really dislike the paper. Although the paper didn’t buckle a lot, the surface of the paper could not handle multiple washes of paint. Luckily it was cheap, so I set out to see how fast I could fill it up. That in turn freed me up to sketch dangerously, without fear of making mistakes. That I would recommend to anyone who wants to grow in their Urban Sketching skills.’

Nino: ‘This sketch is special to me for two reasons. Firstly from a technical side it was a breakthrough sketch for me. I have for a long while been pushing myself to sketch more freely and without drawing in pencil first. This was the first sketch where I felt like I had a breakthrough regarding this. I sketched it directly with ink and brush. When I made mistakes I just went on. In the end I feel like I managed to capture both the perspective and chiaroscuro well.’

Nino: ‘This is of one of my favourite stations and somewhere I come often. We lived in the Netherlands for just over a month when I first came to see what Haarlem was like. As soon as I stepped off the train I knew it had to be a beautiful city, because the station was so beautiful. (It is also a Rijksmonument.) As I walked through the city that day I knew that Haarlem was where I wanted to stay. I have since fallen in love with the city and its people. Whenever we come back after being away for a couple of days, I feel a sense of rest coming over me as I step out onto the platform, knowing that I was home again.’

Nino: ‘Into this I drip a few drops of ink, depending on how light or dark I want the shade to be, and dilute it with water. I usually make just three shades, one very light, one medium and one dark shade. I like to start off with the lightest shade to plot in the basic shapes. (And with lightest I mean slightly-dirty-water light.) Thereafter I like to block out the white areas with a white wax crayon to make sure they stay white, after which I build up the shapes with the darker shades. I always take some kitchen towel along to wipe my brush on or dab the paper with. It also comes in useful when cleaning up again: I just wipe the palette clean with the kitchen towel and throw it in the nearest bin.’
‘I remember that it was quite cold and it only got colder as the day wore on. I was so glad that I had packed my fingerless gloves, because I needed them!’
