Een maand geleden viel het Russische leger binnen in Oekraïne. Verschillende urban sketchers-groepen zijn in die maand actief gebleven: zij willen dat het verhaal van de oorlog verteld wordt en dat de wereld ziet wat er gebeurt.
Iryna Potapenko tekende de chaos en onrust op het station van Odessa, waar duizenden mensen met de trein willen vluchten. Ze deelde haar tekening via Urban Sketchers Odessa.
Uliana Balan houdt een dagboek bij over de oorlog, waarvan deze pagina gedeeld werd door Urban Sketchers Odessa. Hier zie je moeder en kind in de schuilkelder na een luchtalarm in Odessa.
De urban sketchersgroep in Ivano-Frankivsk (@urbansketchers_if) heeft besloten om door te gaan met hun bijeenkomsten, zolang het kan. Hun doel is om zoveel mogelijk van de stad in oorlog vast te leggen, voordat er grootscheeps geweld zal uitbreken. Zij hebben ook een manier gevonden om geld in te zamelen door tekeningen te verkopen.
Hun eerste bericht nadat de oorlog begon was een oproep aan ons en neem ik integraal over:
Our #urbansketchers chapter is in the west of Ukraine, but we also woke up on February 24 from the shelling of our airport. Currently it is relatively calm in our part of the country. We are constantly following the news, supporting our loved ones, supporting our army and hosting refugees. But even here no one is safe and air raid sirens go off every day.

Today we have gathered for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale war.
We gathered to document our city in our sketchbooks at such a tragic time for our country.
The city has changed. There are now tents where first aid training is conducted every hour, tents with a field kitchen, where refugees are fed. There are now checkpoints and sandbags, it is not surprising to see Armed Territorial Defense fighters on the streets. Thousands of people fleeing the war are now staying here or resting on the way to the border.
Ivano-Frankivsk is different, and we keep all the changes in our sketchbooks.
And then we return to the usual things of the last two weeks: volunteering, weaving camouflage nets, working and providing information support for Ukraine.

Indrukwekkende getuigenissen van mensen die, hoop ik, troost en strijdlust vinden door hun wereld te blijven tekenen. Ronduit verontrustend is het dat, buiten deze twee groepen in Odessa en Ivano-Frankivsk, van de meeste andere Oekraïense urban sketchersgroepen na 24 februari geen berichten meer zijn vernomen. Laten we hopen dat ze deze oorlog overleven.
