Joudi in actie

“Tekenen in cafés is mijn lievelingsbezigheid.”

Tips

USK Interview: Joudi Sammani

Joudi in action

by Roger Klaassen

A few years ago, I discovered the instagram account of Joudi Sammani (Sketch by the Canal) with her sketches of Delft. I wanted to ask her to interview her for our website, but I was careful: she wasn’t active on our Facebook group or in other Urban Sketchers groups. Wouldn’t it look a bit pushy if I contacted her? But then, Joudi discovered our urban sketchers group and we met during the Sketch Weekend in Maastricht. She immediately agreed to be interviewed!

Joudi Sammani is 28 years old and she lives in Delft. “In 2017, I came to the Netherlands from Aleppo in Syria. I graduated with a bachelor degree in International Business Administration last year and I currently work as communication officer at a social enterprise in The Hague.”

Joudi has always loved to draw and paint: “I made my first architecture sketch in 2012, when I was planning to become an architect. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I was unable to achieve that. For me, I consider Urban Sketching as a way of preserving the dream of becoming an architect.”

City Center of Delft 2018
“These Sketches are the first sketches I made.”

Aleppo – 2018
“While I didn’t sketch these on location, these drawings are very special to me. I sketched them from the last photos I took of the old city of Aleppo after it was liberated from extremists groups. You can still see the ruins in the sketches, these historical buildings are one of the few that survived.”

Urban Sketching is more than just drawing

Joudi told me in detail what she means by the ‘unfortunate circumstances’ that prevented her to study architecture. She told me how her family in Aleppo suffered from robbery, violence, atrocities and terror in a complicated situation where different groups of fighters were fighting each other. It caused them to leave their home and flee the country. In late 2017, Joudi arrived in the Netherlands.

Joudi: “When I moved to the Netherlands, I was having a hard time adjusting to the life here and the fact that I had to leave my country that I love dearly. I always loved to draw and paint. However, during this time I struggled to find motivation to do so. This is when I discovered Urban Sketching via Instagram. I was intrigued by the idea that a sketch does not have to be perfect. Moreover, I could make it an activity to motivate myself to go out of the house to sketch on location.”

Maastricht 2022
“I made these sketches during the Maastricht National Sketch Weekend 2022 organised by Urbansketch NL.”

“I watched videos on Alphonso Dunn’s YouTube channel where I learned various sketching techniques, like cross-hatching, how to frame a scene and how to draw textures.” Where Dunn’s drawings are very precise and with tiny details (an accuracy that can be achieved in a studio, but not on location, I would say), however, Joudi keeps her drawings more open en spontaneous.

Joudi finds inspiration in the works of other urban sketchers. She likes the drawings of Danny Hawk, especially the way he combines elements like water and greens in his sketches and how he uses different values of one colour to create shadows. Joudi loves how Allan Kirk sometimes uses one colour to make shadows and create depth in his sketches. In my sketches, Joudi likes how I capture the essence of the dutch cities that I draw.

Leiden 2022
“I made these Sketches during a sketch walk in Leiden joined by fellow urban sketchers.”

Understandably, for Joudi, urban sketching is more than just drawing: “For me, it is a wholesome activity. I grab my sketchbook and art supplies and go outdoors, sit in cafés or by the canals in Delft to sketch (hence the name @sketch_by_the_canal).”

“The act of sketching in different cities in the company of people of different ages and nationalities is absolutely inspirational. I really enjoy being around like-minded people, whom I can learn from and who motivate me to sketch outside my comfort zone.”

The materials Joudi uses are the simple tools we all know: graphic pens (fineliners) and Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolours. Sometimes, she also uses ballpoint pens and coloured markers.

Delft 2019 – 2022
Various sketches in different cafés around Delft’s city center across the past few years. “Sketching in cafés is my favourite activity.”

Scheveningen 2022

Tips

Her favourite sketching locations, Joudi finds them in the historic city center of Delft. “I like any canal in the old city. I also like to sit in a nice café with a good view, such as Otelli Delft – which is located on the Markt of Delft with a view of both the Nieuwe Kerk and city hall. The Oostpoort in Delft is also a beautiful spot to sketch.”

Joudi’s number one tip: “Keep it simple. I have often made the mistake of focusing too much on details and trying to make the sketch perfect… so you end up with too little time to finish the sketch.”

Delft 2018 – 2022

For the same reason, Joudi draws in small sketchbooks : “I use small size paper (13 x 21 cm or 12 x 12 cm) because I don’t want to spend a lot of time on one sketch. It helps me be more analytical and to consider which details to focus on while not getting distracted by the rest.”

Another tip: make screenshots of sketches you like. “I draw inspiration from them. Sometimes I save them because of the locations, or for the colour schemes used by the artists and sometimes because of an interesting drawing technique.” Joudi advises to try out different materials and techniques. Doing this, you will discover your favourite way of working and develop your own style.

Another important tip: always (always!) carry a small sketchbook and a pen. “You never know when you might have some spare time to kill.”

“Have fun!” If you love what you do, improvement and development of your skills will come automatically.

Thank you for your story, Joudi! We hope that, as fellow urban sketchers, we can make you feel more at home here.
